Yelan’s Role and Skills
Yelan functions as a off-field DPS hydro character with a burst similar to Xingqiu. Her Elemental Skill (E) phases her into a lifeline allowing her to mark enemies that she comes in contact with. Once shes phases out, enemies who are marked will explode taking hydro damage. It works similar to Sayu’s E with tapping giving you a short dash forward and holding E gives a longer phasing time and directional control. Her Elemental Burst (Q) deals an initial AOE hydro damage before creating “Exquisite Throw” which are coordinated hydro attacks for the character similar to Xingqiu rainswords. Both scaling on Yelan’s E and Q are based on her HP meaning that you’ll wanna stack as much HP% to maximize her damage numbers.
How To Build Yelan
The biggest problem plaguing Yelan is her high energy burst cost of 70. Considering that her burst is the most important aspect of her kit, you’ll wanna make this a top priority when building her. Aim for above 180ER for her. Your requirement might vary depending on her weapon or team composition. Once her ER requirement are met then only should you focus on Crit Rate / DMG.
For Hutao players, Yelan does not apply hydro fast enough to enable Hutao vapes. This becomes even worse when you’re running Thoma as a shielder for Hutao. Do not replace Xingqiu for Yelan in a Hutao vape team! Instead run both of them together.
Artifact set
Emblem of Severed Fate (4)
The 2 piece +20% ER helps a bit to solve Yelan’s energy requirements. Meanwhile the 4 piece gives a substantial DMG buff for her Q based on how much ER she has, which is something she should be built for anyway. Both the 2 and 4 piece benefits Yelan heavily, its no surprise this is her BiS.
Emblem of Severed Fate (2)
Tenacity of the Milelith (2)
An okay piece if you don’t have a good 4EoSF. The HP% buff from the Tenacity set will help slightly increase Yelan’s DMG.
Emblem of Severed Fate (2)
+15% Hydro DMG (2)
An okay piece if you don’t have a good 4EoSF. The Hydro DMG buff from the HoD set will help slightly increase Yelan’s DMG.
Emblem of Severed Fate (2)
Noblesse Oblige (2)
An okay piece if you don’t have a good 4EoSF. The Burst DMG buff from the Noblesse set will help slightly increase Yelan’s Q DMG.
Weapon
Favonius Warbow (4✩)
The best 4-star option as it heavily solves her ER problem giving you the option of focusing on her personal damage for artifact stats.
Aqua Simulacra (5✩)
Yelan’s signature weapon that boosts HP and damage of the wielder. The buffs also works when the wielder is off-field so its pretty much perfect for her.
Elegy for the End (5✩)
This weapon is to be used only in reaction based comps such as Vape Hu Tao, Yelan’s personal damage is lower than other options on this list, but is more beneficial for the team’s damage per rotation.
Sacrificial Bow (4✩)
This ideally needs to be at refinement [R3-R5] to function properly in most Yelan teams rotations without desyncing the rotation and extending her field time.
Mouun’s Moon (4✩)
The Stringless (4✩)
Slingshot (3✩)
Mouun’s Moon (4✩) works best at [R3+] and makes HP% Goblet potentially a stronger option instead of Hydro Bonus especially in comps with strong DMG% buffs.
Talent
C0-C6
Burst (Q) > Skill (E)
Q takes precedent over anything else because it’s where Yelan does the most damage while also working off-field. Similar to most off-field DPS, her Normal Attacks (NA) can be ignored entirely as it provides nothing of value to the team.
Main stat and substat
Sand: Energy Recharge / HP%
Goblet: Hydro DMG
Circlet: Crit Rate / DMG
- Energy Recharge
- Crit Rate / DMG
- HP%
Making sure Yelan’s Burst is ready every rotation is extremely important so ER will always take priority first. Once the ER requirement is met then only concentrate on DMG. Yelan also mainly scales off HP%, so don’t build her for ATK%.
Constellation
C2 > C6* > C1
C2
Arguably the most valuable Constellation for Yelan, as it provides an additional water arrow every other Burst wave. This extra arrow has a set scaling of 14% of Yelan’s Max HP.
The main benefit is that this instance applies Hydro separately from the Exquisite Throws, which increases Yelan’s Hydro application and fixes issues found at Constellation 0 and 1.
C6
Constellation 6 is one of Yelan’s strongest. This allows her to spend a few more seconds on-field to deal a truckload of front-loaded damage. While C6 can extend a rotation with Yelan’s extra field time, you can probably defeat the enemy in one rotation anyway (with the right team, of course).
C1
This Constellation eases her Energy Recharge requirements while also increasing her damage. This allows you to invest in more offensive substats like HP and CRIT. Yelan’s Skill also deals respectable damage, but the Energy generation is the highlight of this Constellation.
While Constellation 1 allows for more on-field activity, mobility and more flexible rotations, it is important to keep in mind that using it will force you to have your rotation at least 21-22 seconds long. Note that this Constellation is NOT a DPS increase if you are already using two Elemental Skills per rotation and have no need for the additional Skill use.
